In a Cell paper in 1996, Bruno reported the discovery of the toll receptor in Drosophila !!... later, orthologs of this receptor were identified in mammals and it was a breakthrough in understanding innate immunity. After 1996, Bruno and his team has made a huge contribution to the study of innate immunity in Drosophila. Understanding immunity in Drosophila will give us insights to understand immunity in ticks and other vectors.
